The Bjorling Sound: A Recorded Legacy Hardcover – May 30 This one is titled "The Bjoerling Sound" written by Stephen Hastings and published by the University of Rochester Press. As I was reading this, my first thought was that this superbly written book wouldn't appeal to the casual reader.
But, on second thought, I think it might because /5(15). Indeed, the sound was so problematic that even John Steane, in his book The Grand Tradition, panned the recording as showing (in his words) “surface wear” on Björling’s voice at the time.
But Steane, a very knowledgeable man, should have compared this recording to the live Met performance of the same opera, where Björling’s. The Björling Sound is a treasure trove waiting to be plundered by admirers of a singer whose phrasing was subtle and sensitive enough to merit comparison with Jascha Heifetz’s artistry on the violin, and no less valuable for anyone interested in the history of recorded classical music as the industry defined itself in the formative years.
